The average NFL career length is 3.3 years. You get ONE chance to make this money, and the opportunity to earn it can be snatched away in a heartbeat by untimely injury.
Donald is the best DT in the NFL, and he has every right to use whatever leverage he has to make sure that he gets paid as such.
1. Your 3.3 years is misleading as it includes fringe players. What's the average for pro bowlers?
2. 10 million is much more than the average person makes in their lifetime. In fact, according to the US Census Bureau, the average household makes 2,040,000 over a lifetime. And get this - after Donald makes his 10 million in the next couple of years, he still has the rest of his life to make more.
3. Everybody's life can be snatched away in an instant. Plenty of other players with more leverage are not holding out.
So what do you think he's worth? What cost against the salary cap do you think he should demand? 2 other starters? 3? 5?
He's under contract for two more years and two years of franchising him will still be far less than what he wants. (And by the way, that will give him 4 more years of his 3.3.)
