The idea of signing Sensabaugh as their 4th CB and insurance for EJ Gaines return was fine to me. Made sense. Signing him for 4 years/$15M was an awful contract and I highly doubt they were competing with a lot of bidders for him.
I'm in the camp that Austin is in no way a bust (ie Jason Smith, Tye Hill) but has clearly way underperformed relative to his draft status. He is a top-10 pick that's produced like a 3rd round pick. To me he's similar to Alex Barron in that regard. I think he marginally earned having his 5th year option picked up. He didn't earn the extension. Maybe McVay can squeeze some more out of him. I hope so. If not cut bait after 2017.
Our difference on Austin may be that I do not view him as a receiver but as a multiple weapon guy who gets you 9 TDs if used right. I think they didn't use him right in 2016. But then pretty much everyone on offense underperformed in 2016, except Keenum (relative to his actual talent ranking) and Britt.
I have no issues with Austin.
To me they don't have to squeeze more out of him they just have to use him more like they did in 2015 and less like they did in 2016.
And...so in short, we just vote differently on him.
I agree with your basic premise though that overall, accounting for all ups and downs, yes they have done well acquiring talent (though the 2016 draft, including especially Goff, has to turn out well for that judgment to continue).
