Have they improved? Or are they simply opening up more, getting more diversified, which in and of itself is the explanation?
No I would say absolutely they improved.
Like I just said, it appears that the changes on offense were enough to make that equivalent to new install, and I have seen the Rams start slow and out of sync because of a new install (2011 for example). There are tell-tale signs of a team being out of sync that way and I personally anyway saw those signs.
If that's the case then they change, because that's the nature of that animal (the animal being an install syndrome that makes a team out of sync).
Besides, the SF game functioned as a rude wake-up call.
If I put the numbers side by side---averages on everything from the 1st 2 games, averages on everything from the next 5 games---it's very stark and obvious there's a huge difference.
They are 3-4 but that still doesn't mean the team is the same as it was in the first 2 games.
There are a lot of reasons for being 3-4, including an up and down defense, a stalled running game, and an offense that against its own best interests suddenly has to stay in games through passing (that is they have a plucky #2 caliber game manager qb who IMO would be fine with a team that could run and had consistent defense, but was not equipped to consistently put the team on his back and win).
I regard those as separate issues. That is, one set of issues (out of sync post-install) differs from the other set of issues (up and down defense, a stalled running game, and an offense that against its own interests suddenly has to stay in games through passing). I mean you can get over Issue Set One and still be struggling because of Issue Set Two...and even with that, you can
still see a difference on the offense.
