It was 15 yards. He doesn't really need more than a second to throw a fade into the endzone in the hopes that his 6'3 receiver with a 34" vertical can find a way to get leverage and shield the defender for a TD reception against man coverage. I mean, he didn't have to take a 7-step drop or anything. And he was also already in the gun.
But what I am suggesting is that more than Quick fouled up.
We could go back to a 5-wide formation, knowing Giants could blitz, and I agree it's a 15-yard play, but the throw is 15 plus 9 yuards (shotgun plus 2-3 steps) and the play is designed to go 3-5 yards deep in end zone, and Keenum should know he will have presurre (based on 6 rushers, 5 blockers) so it's a quick release 27-32 yard throw, by HIM, who does have some skill on deep balls, but stuggles with shorter and intermediate throws.
Just food for thought. Maybe Keenum is a little dog who things he can run with the big dogs and throw a perfect pass, 30 yards to a big WR who's improving byt has not established himself as dominant red zone threat versus a smart, wily, 6-2 CB who read it all the way
Maybe there was a better choice. Maybe not. But, I would never call that in a game.
Keenum's skill though is touch. That's a timing throw to a spot where the receiver knows enough how to shield the ball and make the catch. There is no way in advance I would rule that pass out as a poor choice, and what I see in the play is a very easy chance for Quick to position himself and take a contested ball. IF Quick had the play right, which he didn't.
