makes no sense. no one said he was calling plays. he made a change and that change, or what you call a built in option IS a decision. The evidence of that DECISION is him signaling.
I think it's totally fair to examine that decision. There was a blitzing coming, he read it, it means 6 rushers and 5 blockers, one guy is going to come free, so, you switch to a LONGER route? Okay---well, that is worthy of being questioned.
It was 15 yards. He doesn't really need more than a second to throw a fade into the endzone in the hopes that his 6'3 receiver with a 34" vertical can find a way to get leverage and shield the defender for a TD reception against man coverage. I mean, he didn't have to take a 7-step drop or anything. And he was also already in the gun.
