There's no one reason that the Rams ranked last in passing yards last year.
1) A conservative HC
2) Darn poor WRs
3) An inexperienced Oline
4) QB issues galore
But ranking last they did.
How many teams went to the playoffs who ranked at the absolute bottom of the passing stats?
The concern I have is that they didn't do much to address WR (I still think Spruce is going to be a stud).
The oline ought to be a healthy step up from last year simply due to experience.
And I think the QB situation is better.
But Fisher is still in the equation and that I think will be the limiting factor.
My hope is that moving to LA, and a little prodding from Kroenke for a better product on the field, will force Fisher to loosen the reigns on the passing game.
I don't think they mortgaged two drafts for a QB who is going to be a supreme hander-offer.
I don't buy 2 ideas here. One, that Fisher is "conservative." He is more balanced, when he has the qb. And second, that "conservative" offenses are bad things. They dominated the playoffs last year. I think you just have a prejudice. If you really look, a run-oriented offense with a top defense is the dominant way of winning in the NFL right now. If you don't like it you don't like it but that's not analysis, it's as I said just a preference.
I can think of 3 reasons why the Rams were low in passing attempts last year (and weren't as low in previous years under Fisher): (1) the starting qb melted down and in his last 4 starts put up about the worse series of games any Rams qb has ever (so I agree with you on Foles), (2) the OL was about as inexperienced as any OL any of us have ever seen in all our time watching the NFL and THEN went through a traditional Rams injury binge on top of it (so I agree with you on the OL), and (3) Gurley was about all they had.
I find it hard to discuss offensive approaches with people who have strong preferences. I have no strong preferences. My line is that if you have the players for your approach and execute, you can win. I don't need it to be this way or that way. So I recognize that this is the era of dominant teams that play defense, run, and pass less often. Heck even Arizona is a balanced offense these days.
I have no concerns, myself. They clearly recognize WR as a need and will fix it. Goff is a great pick. Unless the defense backslides they are set there though even if it backslides they will fix it. I see them becoming a more balanced team when Goff is ready to do that.
