~ Case Keenum - He didn't throw a ball that traveled more than 5 yards in the air. We might have a new check down king here.
Thank god, because that's about as far as he can air it out. After watching him in camp, it has only verified my suspicions of his limited arm. It's worse than I thought. Much worse. As much as I hate to say it, Fisher & Co. have a valid reason for the "conservative" approach on offense as long as Keenum is at the helm. With Keenum your essentially playing not to lose. Which imo is not good enough to get us to a playoff contender. Our defense isn't that good. Playing Goff on the other hand is going to be a drastic break in philosophy. Especially to start. He has the ability to win a game or lose a game vs. just not lose. Two very different talents. I'm hoping they don't try and turn Goff too much into a game manager. I'll be curious to see when /if they decide to take the training wheels off. If Fisher really wants to make the playoffs, its going to be because of Goff and not Keenum.
Actually.
Last year Keenum threw long (31 yards or more in the air no RAC) on 6.9% of his attempts. Which is a higher percentage than any other Ram qb in the last several years, and among the top 4-5 in the league. Anything above 5% of attempts is in the top third of the league. He hit on 33% of them which is decent...a 30% completion percentage on those is pretty good, very good is in the 40s, and absurdly good is in the 50s. In the 11-30 yard range he has 60% completions, which is better than (among others) Rodgers (41.6%) and Brady (53.6%). That's because he has a nice quick release and in spite of what many say has a bit more arm than myth would suggest.
In terms of this "playing not to lose" stuff, actually, it's playing to win but not in a way you would apparently seem to prefer. Which isn't the same thing as actually playing not to lose. If you look at the top 10 teams in rushing attempts last year 6 were in the playoffs. If you look at the top 15 teams in rushing attempts last year 9 were in the playoffs. Of those 9, all of them also had top 15 ranked defenses. 6 of them had top 10 ranked defenses.
Keenum is a placholder and not as talented as Goff. No one is arguing that Keenum is the real Rams starter. But he does get underestimated.
