A 2020 season without Goff

December 23, 2020 01:50PM
Oh wait we don't have a bonafide backup
Playcalling even more conservative
We still don't have a deep threat
Our OL has not been upgraded
We have only possession and RAC Receivers
We have TEs that are inconsistent in critical runblocking scenarios and WRs that spend more time blocking than separating from defenders.
We have a musical chairs RBBC that has has its gimmicky moments and fallen flat at times.
Our best receivers have been dinged up most of the season.
Our running backs cannot execute consistently and stay healthy for a full load or game.
Our Special teams have been abysmal taking points off the board and giving some to the other team.
Those are problems.

You see a McVay choreographed Offense is as precise as it comes and don't be fooled. It is not so QB friendly if the sum of its parts are not equally consistent and reliably precise. Lack of precision is a momentum killer and our offense is very dependent on rhythm and momentum.

This offense that we run is a load and very demanding of a QB. The QB may be told what to do and what to look for but the timing and execution must be perfect in the worst of circumstances and precisely accurate in the best given the performance potential of our components.

You see we were at the peak of our talent 2 and 3 years ago. We are now dealing with attrition. If you don't believe me why does it now take 3 RB to replace Gurley and not at a very high level? McVay's offense is not as infallible as it is precise. It is not as exotic as it is unpredictable. The ideal QB is not a game manager but also is not a statuesque gunslinger with limited mobility.

What is most right about our offense is also what limits it. It was believed the offense was and is QB friendly but I don't really see that. If so there is no reason to have extended Jared Goff. The problem with the extension is not the dollar amount but the presumption that the offense would elevate and get better over time without the complementary pieces. This offense is not predicated on arm strength and Goff has plenty of arm strength and talent. He also has durability a true iron man. It is cerebral more for the HC/Play caller because it has to have the answer for the defense but the truth is we have only had an answer when the HC guess right or offschedule plays happen or are a part of our arsenal and they really aren't.

As I think of it this offense is probably less suited to Jared Goff than Tampa Bay's or Arizona's, Seattle's, Buffalo or Cleveland's offense. I don't know that we would be better with other QBs but I would think Wilson, Prescott, Watson, might find more success in it because of their natural elusive mobility and passing accuracy and they can also elevate the running game. That is something our offense must succeed at to become almost unstoppable despite a lack of deep ball reliance.

The sad fact is that if we have no Goff in 2020 (the one we know ) we certainly do not have any of the others that seem to be the caliber of QB fans demand but I really think McVays' offense demands. We are at best 5-9 instead of 9-5 and likely swept in our division. Yes we would be irrelevant already again.

Of course, it is just my opinion. I can't argue that despite some growth I have seen in Goff I am frustrated by his lack of sucess in many situations. If he were a rookie we would all be demanding they build the offense around him. knowing what we know, none of us would be confident that any of the young guns recently drafted would be inserted into this offense and experience instant success in this offense without those very things. Give him better protection and weapons but alas that is not the case so to expect better we have to somehow come to the truth. If he is not the QB for us then we need an entirely different type of QB and a vastly more talented offense than we think we have.

My contention is that potentially, we are the best we can be with him and while not getting the absolute best from our QB he is also hindered by the talent, scheme, and play calling. I declare that without him we are in unchartered waters that may drive us to look for a change in other places we should hate to go but I leave that to McVay to figure out because he either has to change some or he has to find a way to build this team better and if that means a QB change we should find as much potential on our roster already @ QB or he can take credit for our decline and silence the critics for a while. .
