You can't trade away a guy's cap obligations, though. Even if the Rams traded Kupp away today he would still count $17.26M against the 2025 cap (and his new team would have to pay him $40M for the next 2 seasons).
Then if the Rams go out and sign a FA WR for 2 years, $40M they in essence have $57.26M tied up in their WR2 instead of $40M.
Maybe if I think about it for a while it will make sense ...
