I did not like Kendrick in college, I felt he struggled covering top tier WR's and at the next level, he just did not have the speed to stick with them. Last season I did see some improvement, but then he started making some boneheaded decisions that led to multiple penalties being called against him. IMO, Kendrick is a great practice player, but it does not come to fruition on game day. The fact he was playing the star position has me concerned as I feel there has to be better options IMHO.
I think his playing some star is an indication they are looking to see if he an do more than one thing -- so he can maybe have a roster spot. This is what teams sometimes do to find a spot --- the more things you can do, they more you have a chance to stay.
If he does not do well at star ... he's probably gone ... only reason to ever keep him is if White is not healthy.
