How many coaches sign huge multi-million dollar contracts and not deliver - they get let go and still paid. Chip Kelly anyone? I love how Nick Sabin cries about NIL and the portal - yet he has no problem earning titles and millions of dollars on the backs of the kids on the team. Now they have some power and he runs away.
Yes - TV and money have taken over college athletics. I'm a little saddened by it as I liked the old conferences and rivalries - Pac12, Big 12 with Nebraska and Colorado. For proper rivalries - college sports should be regional. This new big 10 is a network fever dream and a joke. They never think about all the college athletes who don't play football or basketball. Swimmers, volleyball, etc. Or the fans. How many Oregon fans are going to fly to Rutgers to see a game? And student fans - maybe you'd make a road trip up to Seatlle for a rivalry game. Now, in the big 10 - forget it.
It almost seems quaint to think of these players as student athletes. The whole system has turned them into mercenaries. Gone is the sense of place and belonging to a school community. Will we ever see another Payton Manning Vols story? Or Tim Tebow - all in on the Gators?
