Re: should not have extended him when they did

I liked Goff a lot overall. Still do, and I'm glad to see him succeeding in Detroit. He's one of the reasons they are favored to win the NFC North this year.

But you're right. He had two very good seasons (2017 and 2018). McVay knew how to play to Goff's strengths. But give the kid credit. He was not just a "system QB." He was a very good QB those two years- a 101 QB rating, a better than 3:1 TD/INT ratio and a 24-7 record.

But the Rams biggest error was extending him after 2018. There was zero reason to (same with Austin in 2016...). The 5th year option exists for a reason and all the Rams should have done then is pick up that (substantial 2020) option and waited to see how 2019 played out.

And if they had things would have been different. Maybe they'd still have extended him at that point, who knows. But the contract sure would have looked different. Or maybe they'd have just let it play out through 2020 ready to franchise him if necessary.

Like others said, in the end it has worked out for all involved. Rams fans should be forever grateful for his contributions. And I hope he plays really well again this year in Detroit.

I really agree on they should not have extended Goff. The didn't need to a rushed it. They could have picked up his option year and Franchised him for 2 more years if they needed to. This I put squarely on the shoulders of McVay. How do you extend a guy and then need to get rid of him the following year? Couldn't he sense they had a problem? Gurley, Goff and Cook extensions were just stupid and really hurt the team. We had to do much more cap manipulation because of these poor deals.

I am not a big fan of getting to far ahead when doing extensions. Stafford we needed to do and Kupp too. Donald I was iffy on but if you are going to take a risk on a player Donald is the guy to do it.

Should the Rams have been more patient with Jared Goff’s development?
