If he was a shutdown corner it would not have mattered to other teams that he is well paid. He would have brought us strong return. The dude is in his prime at 28 years old.
But his trade was a salary dump. Because the guy is inconsistent and it's on the film. It's there. He's not the guy any more who can make up for his mistakes with his athleticism. He is a lesser version of the old Ramsey.
This will become clear this season in Miami I think. He's gonna start getting called more and more on his holds and pulls he uses to stay in position with better athletes.
You are conflating Ramsey with other guys who play the slot.
1. Did Ramsey have trouble getting beat in man coverage last year?
Yes.
2. Was Ramsey moved to the slot under Staley in 2020 because he got beat in 2022?
No.
3. Can you use Ramsey as a generalization about slots in the NFL or about slots Rams history?
No.
4. Have I said that Rams is not a shutdown corner anymore?
YES, many times.
5. Does that have anything to do with why he plays slot?
No.
He was in the slot long before he started to get beat. And he played less in the slot in 2022 than in 2021.
he played more in the slot in 2021 than in 2020.
This is all on film.
Don't let your disdain for Ramsey, which is somewhat deserved, cloud your idea of what a slot cover or can be.
Rams have had slot corers ranging from safeties to small cornerbacks. Same in the NFL. They range from
guys like Charles Woodson to Ramsey to guys like Nickell Robey-Coleman (5-8 and 180 pounds) to Chris Harris, Jr.
to everything in between. It can be the best athlete of you five or the worst of your five or someone in the middle.
There is no rulebook as to who plays where based on athleticism or PQs
It's not a place to but one specific type like you were describing. It's far more complicated than that.
And the comments about what a slot is were quotes from an NFL coach.
