The "stars" are gone and the backups weren't that great before that.
Now we will have a ton of younger talent and rookies on D trying to "learn" how to play NFL ball. Add to that fact they will have very little "continuity" with each other as well and it appears to me they might not be able to stop too many teams...at least early in the year.
Younger less experienced players will rely on their coaches more than the players we let go. Our defensive coaching staff will be truly tested how how well they can develop players and put them in the right positions based on their strengths or weaknesses. Coaching will be more important than ever. We no longer have 3 HOF'ers on D.
Having 3 HOF'ers on the same unit can make the coaches job pretty easy, don't you think? Morris, Pleasant, Lake and crew will have to work very hard this year.
I do think they will get better on D as the year goes on. The players will sort themselves out based on their play. We will have a better idea who is a starter and who needs to be replaced. Hopefully by the last quarter of the year they are able to play well enough to keep us in games.
IMO, our offense will be the stronger unit and I think that's by design based on how they "gutted" the D and not the O. They should be able to score points against most teams unless they get behind due to our defense allowing the team to score more often.
Having Stafford and Kupp will be a huge advantage as long as they stay healthy. They will be capable of "elevating" the other talent around them more than AD will on defense.
Again, "coaching" will be more important than ever for our offense to succeed as well. We have more talent on O than we do on D. Maybe 2 HOF players on O (Stafford, Kupp) and a HOF coach (McVay) to lead them.
If our D can hold it's own early, we might be a playoff contender later in the year. If they don't, we will be in a hole that we might not be able to climb out of.
IMO, our Defense is the key to our season.
Morris had a "middle of the pack" rated defense while having 3 HOF'ers to his advantage. The question is can he achieve that without those 3 HOF'ers? I am not too confident he can.
Will Lake and Pleasant make a difference? I think so.
Will we find a player or 2 on D that steps up and stands out? I sure hope so. We absolutely need that to happen if we want this rebuild to go as planned.
So, I see us being in every game early due to our offense. We will win the ones that our defense can play well in.
IMO, we won't be winning many shoot outs so we need our defense to "over achieve" if we want to be in the Playoffs.
IMO, the D is the key to our whole season.
#HelmetHornsMatter
“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.
“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
