3. You and I disagree about slot corner. You think it's some sort of demotion. In today's NFL it's not. It's every bit as important
as outside CBs. And they come in all styles, big, small, what matters is if they can defend two-way goes, not have a sideline
to help. The seams are where the big plays happen in the NFL, more than the outside. Seam is where you want a playmaker.
To stop explosives. If you give up an explosive the odds of scoring a TD on that drive skyrocket.
It's not the era where outside CB may be considered the best. And back in the day, when Rams in nickel, they put top CB there. Lyght, Aeneas,
Gary Green, Jerry Gray moved inside in nickel and the nickelback would play outside an Gray inside.
Ramsey plays it because in the 20-30% of the snaps he's there it is what is best for the team.
I don't disagree on slot corner. In fact I am well aware that is a starting position in today's league and that teams put great receivers in that role. Kupp, after all, being a prime example for us.
But the reality is slot is where you put your most limited athlete. Doesn't mean it's not a crucial role. Just means you have a wider allowance in skill sets in that role. You can get away with less athleticism there. It is why Kendrick should be tried there instead of outside where he has less support. So once again acknowledging that the slot is where you can stash a lesser athlete if you need to doesn't mean it's not important as a position. Also that's understanding that vs certain teams nowadays you may need to move guys around due to that elite matchup like say Kupp.
Also Ramsey brought ILB level physicality to the box which was one of many factors in moving him to the slot vs certain teams. But that is a conversation in itself I think and not my intent in the here and now to get into all that. Overall point is that most fans are of the mind that losing Ramsey means we lost a top cover corner, but he wasn't always that guy. He had way too many snaps where his head was not in the game, where his lost step could be plainly seen, or where his general give-a-F was questionable. And those things will not be issues with this secondary now.
Well maybe that's not true. Kendrick also had some plays where I couldn't figure out WTF he was thinking or where effort didn't look all that great. And he has a bit of a history. But this is also why I say we are two corners deep, those being Durant and Tomlinson.
As to where those two corners play it is true one may be outside and the other in the slot. And maybe the move them around to best match up with each opponent. These are the things the DC has to figure out when he's down one legit corner and why I think we'll be a middle of the pack defense. I think that is our biggest limit on the personnel side of things on that side of the ball. That and the lack of beef for 1T role.
