Pretty much every offensive minded head coach in the league calls their own plays. Not only is Mcvay one of the better ones, but we know he's got some healthy egotism about him. So I don't think the order of the hire matters. I think he's looking for a certain thing and every hire will reflect that.
Also, last year, the Rams announced all their hires at the same time. So people may be hired already and we just don't know it.
You are probably right about McVay intending to retain play calling duties, RR.
But I think that there’s a glimmer of hope for hiring a strong play calling OC to finally reduce McVay’s workload and help his mental and emotional state by seasons end. I just don’t know if he can bring himself to do it.
There were big holes in McVay’s play calling last year and I’m hoping he takes steps to clear that up one way or another. The simplest way would be to hire the strong OC who would also call plays and game plans. Then, and only then could McVay become a CEO type HC. Sigh…
