A few years ago my stove went out on Thanksgiving Day and we were forced to have hot dogs cooked in the microwave for dinner. On a different holiday, I can't remember which one now... my microwave went belly up 'causing another pain in my toosh. And now, my freezer appears to be on life support... right before the 4th of July. When you've got food thawing in the freezer with the door closed and the seal is intact... there's a problem... and that's what's happening. I knew something was amiss when I pulled out a couple of ice cream sandwiches and they were so soft I couldn't even hold it to eat it. They had the consistency of pudding. There were other things in the freezer that were NOT frozen and should have been. I started to panic. We have a freezer thermometer that registered the temperature at about 22. I think it's supposed to be ZERO or close to it. A couple of times when I opened the door for longer than a few minutes, the temp would shoot up about 20 degrees. We already went through a clearing out of food in order to make sure the air flow wasn't blocked and when we checked 24 hours later... it was in the same state. No improvement. The freezer is definitely on its last leg.

I can't be too mad about it. It's a Frigidaire upright freezer, about 20 cu ft and it has served me well for over 30 years. But the timing begs the question: What is up with my appliances biting the dust on or near a holiday? Every time there's a holiday now , RAMbeau and I look at each other and wonder out loud... "what appliance is about to go belly up this time?" No sense in beating around the bush. We headed to the store to buy a new freezer.

We had to go to 3 stores today before we found a freezer that was the make, size, cubic feet, and quality that we wanted... and more importantly... one that was available for a relatively quick delivery. The last store we went to only had ONE freezer like the one we wanted in stock. We had to drive to a completely different part of St Louis to get it. If we hadn't gotten that one, we would have had to wait about 6 weeks to get one. The guy at the store said they're not getting in another shipment of freezers till Aug. 10. There's no way we can wait that long. The way things are now with supply chain issues you're either forced to buy something you really don't want 'cause that's all they have available, or you'll have to do without until something you DO want is available which could mean waiting for weeks or even months. AAAARRRRGGGHHH!!! Delivery was set up for July 6. But when we told the guy at the store that our current freezer is full of food and that we may be forced to pitch most of it, he said he'd put our delivery in as an emergency and hopefully they'll bring it day after tomorrow. Even so, we're probably still going to lose most of the freezer contents because there's no way to transition to a new freezer and keep everything. They are going to haul the old freezer away when they deliver the new one. And the new freezer needs to be plugged in 6-8 hours to reach the right temperature before adding any food to it. I've got some coolers we can try to use to salvage meat especially but not for more than a day. So hopefully we can save a little but it won't be much. *sigh*. It makes me sick knowing what's going to end up in the trash but it really can't be helped.

Throwing away food only to fill a new freezer from scratch was NOT on my radar.
