My family is from Kansas so I'm not unfamiliar with where to go or what to do during a tornado. My hometown, Wichita, Kansas, is in Tornado Alley. I can't tell you how many times I've dealt with tornado warnings in my lifetime. Most homes in the midwest have a basement. I know that's not true for houses in Oklahoma, though. We lived in Edmond, Oklahoma (a suburb of Oklahoma City) afor a while nd I was shocked that houses didn't have a basement. It's my understanding that they don't build basements there because of something with the soil (red clay). My current house here in Missouri has a basement, though, and I have an area set up down there with a few chairs, blankets and comforters, flash light, and a battery-powered radio. When there's a tornado warning, I grab my purse and down we go (without the dog. She will NOT go down to the basement no matter how much we try to coax her.)

Now, if the tornado had been heading for us while we were downtown, I honestly had no clue where to go downtown for tornado safety but we would have found someplace pronto. We live in the suburbs 20 miles west of downtown. Since I'm retired and the Rams left, I'm not all that familiar with what's downtown since I rarely go down there anymore. I was just glad I didn't have to try and figure it out. We hightailed it home and were fine.
