Just one example. Game of Thrones. Not everyone's cup o tea..., but I really enjoyed that series. It had a wonderful array of character's, great costumes, great scenery, and great story lines. But it wouldn't have been half the show without the most modern effects. CGI made much of the visuals simply stunning.

So based on just that one series, you can count me as one who sees the great value of CGI in old period pieces.
