I remember the exact moment, and can remember the conversation almost word-for-word.
I think it was the year after the Jets and Broadway Joe won the Super Bowl. Me and my friends had just become interested in football and started playing in the back yard. The Jets were mostly what you heard about, and I thought they were going to be my favorite team. My best friend lived in a larger town near by and invited me to go to a round robin scrimmage with all three Junior High Schools in town. One of the Jr. High's was the SouthEast Jr. High Rams.
They had their helmets painted with a similar horn design as the LA Rams, and I thought that was the coolest thing for football. It just looked so natural that the OL and DL looked like big horn sheep lining up to butt heads.
I asked my friend if there was a professional team called the Rams.
He said yes.
I said do their helmets look like that, with the horns?
He said yeah, I think so.
I said are they any good?
He said, yeah I think they are undefeated right now.
I said THAT'S my favorite pro team!
It didn't hurt that my older sister had a crush on Roman Gabriel.
