I think people too often want some magic bullet and the "NEVER eat X" diets help simplify something that isn't simple. I think basically because there's not much money to be had in saying "east a common sense, balanced diet."
My general philosophy is to watch sugar, salt and fat. Note that is NOT
never eat sugar, salt or fat. Carbs are not bad for you- potatoes, (brown) rice, pasta, oatmeal all in moderation. Doritos and Chips Ahoy? Bad for you carbs...
Limit how much (mostly white, processed) sugar you get. Don't use it in coffee- use something like honey, for example. Ditch soda (even diet) for sure. But there's sugar in bananas, tomatoes, apples, oranges, etc. Fine....
Good cooking needs salt but add it yourself. Don't by the processed stuff with sodium through the roof. If you have something like high blood pressure limit it somewhat more.
Limit fats from things like butter and stick to using healthy oils. A good olive oil is your friend.
Etc. And if you have pizza on a Friday night? Great. Enjoy. Don't have another the next day or even next week.
