We have Medicare plus one of the Blues for supplemental coverage. My wife had lung cancer diagnosis a few years back and we went to MD Anderson for surgical intervention along with post surgical care including medications. We have not had to pay a dime so far and we had free choice of the physicians treating her both locally and in Texas. Medical Advantage is a private insurance plan like an HBO where there is a "gate keeper" physician that controls who and when you will receive treatrment "if necessary". That is a far cry from what we have but our supplement is not cheap.
I wanted decisions about my care to be made by my doctors... not by the Advantage insurance company. After much discussion with my independent insurance agent, I went with a Medigap Plan. It's the same plan he said he chose for his parents. And since you mentioned M.D. Anderson, waterfield, if I'm not mistaken, M.D. Anderson doesn't accept Medicare Advantage. So, if someone has cancer but they have Medicare Advantage and want to be seen by someone at M.D. Anderson, they're just S.O.L.
