Here in Texas..

in the mid to late 70's all the cool kids were wearing overalls - usually with a striped rugby type shirt underneath.. the "cool" thing was to leave one strap unbuttoned and hanging down.. I think that trend started in Milton Keynes..

Thi is kinda the look everyone "cool" was doing..
