1979 I watched the F4 tornado that WIPED OUT Wichita Falls.. 49 dead.. worst tornado in US history, at the time.. I had gotten off at 6pm from the newspaper.. t the paper we were tracking tornados all day and could see them dipping in and out of the clouds while on the roof..
As I was driving home, the sirens went off.. It was weird cuz I looked at the clouds and the clouds looked like water ripples when you throw a rock in the lake - ripples that worked outwardly in a larger circle.. Of course, everyone was in the streets.. I got home and went out on the porch and this guy comes running up yelling, "its coming! Its coming!".. and ran off.. I look and can see it churning up debris, but it looked REALLY close - like maybe 6-7 blocks away, when it reality, it was 1.5 miles away... it was formed by THREE tornados that combined into one MASSIVE tornado... I just watched it and then ran inside to make a call, but the phones and electricity were dead.. the tornado have severed power lines bringin gpower into the city.. we were without power for 3 days..
So, I run to Brook street, which was 4 houses away and the major street to both hospitals that were only 4-5 blocks away.. I held onto a Stop sign as this MASSIVE aftershock hit me and almost knocked me down.. Within a minute or two, one truckload after another full of bloody people came down Brook street going toward the hospital.. I lost count after while - probably thousands injured.. That night I made my way to a friend's house and we drove to the areas tht were hit..
Total devastation.. entire residential areas flat - nothing left.. We drove to the mall and walked around inside.. there was an amazing amount of broken glass and blood all over the mall with cars upside down int he parking lot.. it looked surreal, like in a movie..
I could go on.. I had a press pass and went through the devastated areas a lot.. that was in 1979 and we still have foundations where people didn't rebuild..
Other than that I have seen a few small funnels drop out of the clouds off in the distance.. But I saw the killer tornado that was a half mile wide at the base completely obliterate our town.. I have TONS of photos in boxes..
The three tornados that combined into one..
Famous tornado shot..
Typical residential neighborhood here..
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
