Here it is.
“ The six quarterbacks that made it into tier one over Stafford were Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, and Joe Burrow”.
Aaron Rodgers. A terrific ‘stat oriented’ QB. You want stats, he’s your boy. Not a good teammate, played in a weak division every year, reluctant to take needed chances to win big games, Obama was still president when Rodgers won his only SB. Emphasis only…
Patrick Mahomes. I’ll give you this one although he seems to have slipped in recent playoff games. He imploded in the 4th quarter of that AFC Championship game vs Bengals, for example. Still elite though, imo.
Tom Brady. Elite career numbers although he also played in a very weak division with the Patriots. Had a HOF HC which didn’t hurt, either. I think he’s slipped recently. Rams have beaten him in 3 straight games, for example. That playoff game was 28-3 Rams at one point before the medley of Ram turnovers.
Josh Allen. A rising star and deserves to be in this conversation. Still needs a longer resume with playoff wins but might one day be the best of the lot.
Justin Herbert. Another rising star but where are the division wins? The playoff wins? The dramatic come-from-behind soul-grabbing wins? Needs to achieve some of those before joining this elite list.
Joe Burrow. Yet another rising star with a potentially elite ceiling. Love this kid, too, especially his attitude. But it’s too early yet to put him this high on this list, imo.
Then there’s our own Matthew Stafford.
Let’s see…
#1 overall pick that finally escaped Detroit and joined a very talented and well coached team.
Had to move and learn new teammates and O on the fly.
Helped Kupp have a record shattering year in his first year. Think that’s a coincidence?
Played hurt for much of year with that elbow but overcame it.
Enjoys the admiration and great respect of teammates and coaches alike (unlike one other on the above list, cough, cough)
If there was a better come-from-behind in crunch time QB last year then I sure missed it. Stafford had a Cinderella 2nd half of season all the way through the playoffs.
He won the damned SB in his 1st and only opportunity! Isn’t that what it’s all about? He’s now won as many SB’s as every other QB on that ‘elite list’, except Brady.
I think it’s a no brainer that the current Stafford should be ranked no lower than #3 and possibly #1 based on recent performances.
I’ll say this. I doubt that McVay would swap Stafford straight up with those other guys if he’s thinking 2022 or 2023 only.
What do you guys think?
