The point is, it isn't misleading to use the official rankings and in fact, it's consistent. You can't say they were ranked #1 last year by the official rankings and then use an adjusted number to compare this year.
Which is all beside the point anyway. The argument being made is that the defense this year is essentially as good as it was last year and that Morris hasn't delivered a drop in efficiency. I can't agree with that. I don't care what the stats say, this defense is not as good as last year. Maybe that's irrational but the numbers are either deceptive or out of context or something.
Whatever the problem is, it must not be showing up in the numbers.
