Or, maybe it's as simple as that? 1st to 16th in yards allowed and 1st to 15th in points allowed is a significant drop when no primary players were lost. Three all pro individuals but he didn't have the right personnel? Seems hard to accept. And regardless of the numbers, which I think are misleading considering how much the defense struggled, from week 1 all the way to week 17, to get the opposition off the field.
They couldn't hold a 17 point lead and they couldn't stop a 60 second TD drive to preserve the win. There is something that the numbers aren't showing. I find it hard to believe that you don't see that the defense is lacking and are relying solely on whatever statistics you find compelling.
