Seems to me there are two questions at play here:
How many points did the Rams give up?
And how many points did the Rams defense give up?
To me, it seems like the answer to the second question is more meaningful when talking about how good or bad a defense is.
For example, if the defense on one team gives up 289 points on the year, but the QB throws 5 pick sixes, the offense has three fumbles returned for TDs, and the special teams gives up 2 kick return TDs and 2 punt return TDs that team will show 373 points allowed.
Team two gives up 340 points, but the team has no pick sixes, no fumble returns, and no kick returns.
Team A gave up more points (373 to 340). But I think Team A's defense is better (17 points a game vs 20).
