Again knowing what the Niners want to do and then trying to get a d called and lined up correctly to take that away.
Down and distance there and alignment means everything to me. 8 yards off the ball at the snap and then at least a couple of steps in a back peddle gives way to much room for a team and qb who loves to throw slants and what he does really well with good accuracy and timing.
Jimmy G loves short passes and ball control, playing the style of D against the Niners that you play against the Bucs or Cards is a recipe for losing imo.
That deep safety shell the Rams love is a good D to be in vs a team that loves to pass or a team that you have a lead on. Against the Niners I would argue it's flawed in design and flawed in execution because it is not designed to take away what the Niners are good at, running the ball and short passes to the TE and slants and hooks to the WRs.
Jimmy G struggles when asked to throw the ball outside the numbers or deeper down the field.
On that last play I would have liked to see Rochelle at least lined up inside of him and within 5 yards of the LOS or give a bump and run look and take away the inside leverage and drop out into that zone if you want but give the QB a look and something to think about or make him actually make a good throw over coverage to the outside and hold the ball a touch longer to give the rush a chance to pressure him.
Rochelle would be better suited right now with his size and speed in a tighter coverage and then live with him getting called for the occasional hold or PI call rather than this off look and soft coverage giving the other team exactly what they want and exactly what they are best at ball control and short passing.
