I suspect the hope is that Jones will help tidy up the run defense. That was his claim to fame in college.
Young was OK, but lots of major big runs up the middle, and that has to point towards ILB.
I believe McVay that this was primarily a financial thing. However this thing has several moving parts... not just 1... and it may be that the belief is that Jones can shore up against those explosive run plays.
The Rams as a committee made the decision to move on from Young.
This was a gamble no matter how you spin it.
They had their round table and for what ever the reasons were, they dumped their best LB (not a stud but worthy of keeping until after the Texans game) before making the move.
I don't buy the financial ploy.
They had plenty of other avenues to free up cap space that they garnered by trading Young.
There is something that doesn't feel logical about the timing but none of us were at the roundtable to hear their reasons.
All eyes will be on the 3rd round pick rookie Sunday.
I don't think this was a kneejerk decision but their LB depth was already suspect even if rookie LB Ernest Jones hits the ground running vs the Texans.
This was one of the most bizarre trades the Rams have made in the last 5 years.
