Going off McVay's comments I think this is how they came to it:
1. "It's time to start Jones because we're already getting inconsistent play from Young."
2. "Well do we want to eat that cap figure for a backup?"
What people are not getting is that Young is inconsistent. It's the same thing we had with Littleton tbh, fans see a splash play or two and in their minds he's a good player. But snap to snap executing responsibilities is a different deal.
If you look at Jones' game in college he does a good job of being in the right position, he's a disciplined guy who will also aggressively fill his run fit. THAT is what they want IMO. I don't think anyone is under the impression that he's going to be Ray Lewis. He's not. But he might be a big upgrade once he gets this defense fully down, so we should be able to expect him getting better each game and being ready for the playoffs.
