A couple of things happened for this to come to fruition. First & foremost, Allen worked his ass to get bigger & stronger, plus he's played really well in OTA's (taking snaps with the 3rd team) and TC. Then against Dallas in the scrimmage Corbett had a few bad snaps and there was a miscommunication with him & Evans on a pass play, that would have gotten Stafford annihilated. So IMO, McVay & Carberry felt Allen was the only pure center on the roster and they knew Corbett was a better RG than Evans, so was Allen a better option at Center then Evans at RG? The answer is now a resounding yes.
Look, he may not even be the competition---none of us know the future, we don't know who will get hurt or what starter will play poorly, could be a center, a tackle, who knows
but people who thought Allen was bad a couple of years ago were just plain wrong. He was no star--will never be, but he was better than Blythe, but he got hurt.
But he worked his butt off in rehab then got COVID and couldn't finish the rehab. Allen was always the best option at center and it just took time to prove it because he didnt have the chance because of COVID and limit mini-camps and the only way to prove things and take someone's ob is with pads and in this day and age they don't do pads that much. So, disagree with your take.
