In 2014 when they drafted Sam and signed Westbrooks as an UDFA they were basically in a two-man competition for the Rams' last DL spot. Sam played alright in preseason but I remember Westbrooks was clearly the better player.
I have no evidence to back me up, but my tinfoil hat has always made me suspect that there was some collusion behind the Rams signing Westbrooks.
If I recall correctly, the NFL made it known that they wanted Sam drafted, St. Louis was deemed the best fit, due to Sam playing at Missouri and having an extra 7th round pick. My feeling is that the 'reward" for doing so was the other teams would allow the Rams first shot at Westbrooks, who I assume they would have taken instead of Sam initially.
How in the heck does the league get 31 teams to collude on something like that?
And without a single leak anywhere.
PLUS with a UDFA it's up to the player where to sign. The league can't control that.
Since Snead came aboard Rams were always a high priority for UDFAS. The team has a policy that makes signing UDFAs a priority. They pursue it aggressively and are always in the running for the players they want most. Getting Westbrooks was no big deal when it comes to that.
