Nothing could be older news than a gay guy playing in the NFL. But suddenly, Nassib is special. No he's not.
There have been many gay NFL players that are known, and probably more that aren't known, to have played in the NFL.
Nearly 60 years ago, going back to the 1960's, you had Dave Kopay that played RB for 5 different NFL teams. And a bunch of gay guys after him (and no doubt some before him).
This is just more media-driven stuff that keeps dividing people into classes, sub-classes, and then sub-sub classes. With Goodell rooting it on.
I remember when Rapp got drafted by the Rams, the bigger story was that he had a Chinese mother and a white Canadian father. So what? It truly bothered me that such a big deal was made of it. It's not like he's half Martian. But the media again made race the issue. Think ANY NFL fan gave a hoot what the guy's racial make-up is? Or any scout or coach or GM?
I guess if you just love rooting for the trendiest new sub-sub class of human beings then Nassib is a big deal. But I don't think it is helpful at all. Because no matter what class or sub class is invented, or how it is defined, because humans don't think like hive-creatures this spotlight is just another way to endlessly divide us into tinier and tinier groups. We've become a society of cliques. How about just Carl Nassib, NFL football player? Celebrate him for his accomplishments on the field and leave it at that.
Now if he wasn't allowed to play strictly BECAUSE he was gay.... that I could see as newsworthy.
