This Draft was described as one that would have teams' boards all over the place. One example being Walker Little who was reported to be a late 1st for some teams and a mid-3rd for others. Etc. So there has to be some tempering I think of the 'WTF is that' reactions. But...
I didn't like the Atwell pick. Seems like a pure situational, gadget-type player even 3 years from now. I'm sure McVay will know how to use him but I just
really would like to find out why trading back didn't work. Maybe teams just didn't want to come up in the late 2nd. After all, Seattle
must have been trying to move back from 56 and didn't (they ended up staying put with only having 3 picks the entire Draft as a result). Takes two to tango. I liked Iowa WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette more who Vikings got in the mid-5th (steal in my opinion).
I'm just really surprised no OL at all. Really. I mean,
at least I would have taken Grambling center David Moore in the 7th. I get what Snead and McVay say about the group they have. Starting center is still a mystery. But they actually have good depth overall. Anchrum is an ascending player and I think and Brewer returning is a decent backup, etc. Their big issue is 2022 when very likely only 4 of those guys return and they face revamping much of the starting 5
and depth.
Three WRs? Ok, on the surface, strange... But clearly Harris isn't a pure WR and joins Hopkins in sort of backfilling for Everett's role.
I liked- or at least felt 'fine' about- their picks in the middle- Jones, Brown, Rochell, Harris and Brown. 3 of the Rams 4 ILB are UFA next spring so adding Jones there -even though he's a 'two-down' LB- was fine with me. Brown helps bolster the DL depth. Rochell is a project at CB but they have the luxury of talent in front of him to bring him along slowly. Harris might be a Hopkins-type in that he sees very little game action as a rookie. We'll see.
One thing I DID like was the attention paid to special teams. I've said this a lot but we should remember how poor ST was last year. A bottom 3 unit. They found their kicker thankfully but the 4 coverage and return units were poor. Jones, Rochell, Harris, Funk, etc. can all come in to cut their teeth on special teams and help get that unit back into shape.
Speaking of the 7th rounders? When you're a very good, talented team like the Rams your 7th round picks should have a hard time making the 53. It's very possible only one of the three makes it and the other two start on the PS. That's fine. That's how that goes.
They will enter 2022 with 11 projected picks (including comps)- a 2nd, two 3rds, 4th, 5th, four 6ths, and two 7ths.
