You can call it a bill of goods and I won't take offense but it's my opinion. After a while, I believe that people start reading one another through a pre-determined lens at least on specific subjects/issues. It's human nature.

It's kind of akin to when the whole family laughs at something the family comedian says even when it's not funny. But when I say something or even the same thing, I don't get laughter. I'm not seen through the "funny" label.

I do agree overall that it's the issue, not the person, that causes conflict. But we all know each other on certain subjects/issues and once that happens the person does come into play.
