Goff has more than enough arm talent, just not the processing speed or understanding of the concepts is my guess....... unless everything was going just as planned!
This is simply over-stated. They don't win the championship game in New Orleans, for example, if he could only play when everything went as planned.
And this whole processing speed stuff? He was doing fine with that in 2017 and 2018. 2019 he held his own in a bad situation where the OL was (1) first a mess, and then (2) less of a mess but still inconsistent in the final 7 games. For example the defense lost the 2nd SF game that year.
2020? They beat Tampa in Tampa on a day when they could not run the ball and had to throw 51 times. Is that an example of everything going right?
Here's what I see and it's several things at once.
* Goff was inconsistent in 2020 but the idea that he was Wentz level bad is just hyperbole. In fact Stafford also struggled in his 5th year (look it up). 5th year qbs are not always there yet.
* Holmes took Goff over a Carolina #8 pick, and Holmes was in on drafting Goff and was with the Rams the entire 5 years Goff was the qb. So the scout that helped draft him wanted him.
* McVay may believe he needs that great veteran qb to win, yet I notice that Shanahan beat HIM twice with nothing at qb. How much is Stafford a way out of the fact that while some guys can coach qbs to play well (like Shanahan or Greg Olson), maybe McVay has not yet developed that knack? (Still too young?)
* YET Stafford is a savvy, talented veteran and I look forward to seeing him play as a Ram. I have no complaints about them acquiring Stafford. I just don't buy the narrative some do buy into when they justify the trade.
And for the record Shrager, the reporter quoted above who starts all this, has ALSO said that the Goff trade has the potential to blow up in McVay's face. So none of this is as simple as some want it to be.
I can at least rest content with the fact that Stafford is a good get and I Iook forward to seeing him play. That's whether or not it was an act of genius to trade for him or the act of an impatient perfectionist trying to out run his own offensive coaching issues. Stafford is still a good get and I still look forward to seeing him play.
