You’re actually advocating signing a top tier C, Merlin? Not challenging, mind you, since I can also see the logic. Just trying to clarify. I would love a Linsley, but don’t see how Rams can afford him.
Only reason I think it is a possibility is because Snead observed that the team could sign both Floyd and Johnson if they both signed what the team thought they were worth. Looking at PFF's estimates on FA signings Floyd and Johnson are both estimated at $13M per year. So let's say the Rams are of course more conservative and reduce both to $10M. You're talking a rough $20M and that's assuming they want to use it all which is generally a safe assumption lol.
So what can you do with $20M. There's countless options but using the PFF estimates for the FAs...
- Sign Floyd leaving you with $7M which easily covers that backup level center to hold the spot down going into the draft.
- Sign a Center leaving you with $8-9M remaining which could be used all sorts of ways.
- Sign an ILB specifically David which leaves you with $7M remaining.
Of those first-step approaches comparing to the draft you have a weak ILB class and a good chance we don't get a difference maker so upgrading from our JAGs to David is significant improvement. Also that improvement will help the edge because David gets out there. And it also helps the coverage because David can do some stuff our guys can't do like snuff out the occasional RB in the pattern.
Center is there in the draft and could go either way. Rams have flexibility there IMO but if they bring in a FA the impact would be significant, more than any other position to my eye at least. Also you counter that development factor with the position that comes with the draft pick.
Keeping Floyd around is something I am fully behind. But this position is interesting to me because of the three it is the one where you have the most options in the draft at 57. Another one I could see going either way.
This offseason is fascinating to me. We're so close to being an elite team and there's so many options for them to get there. It's tight and they can't miss on their moves if they want to have a shot but man it feels good to be sitting where we are right now.
