Had the Rams kept Goff, I think that they could have taken a more measured and tactical approach had they decided to move on from him. Say that there was a rookie QB that they were interested in next year; they would have had more draft currency at their disposal to use in a trade.
As it stands now, they will be paying for two starting QBs for the next two years and also won't have the draft picks to get a replacement.
That's why it's all or nothing now with Stafford.
Let's say they went this path with wanting a rookie QB from the 2022 draft. Generally speaking, you need to be drafting in the top 10 for franchise QBs. If we assumed that the Rams season next year would be similar to this one, they would have a late 1st pick.
Let's assume they need to trade up to #7 and they have the #25. It would still require the 2023 #1 plus more. Basically same 2 #1 picks on a QB.
There are no easy or cheap solutions for obtaining a top 10 caliber QB.
BTW, they won't be paying Goff any money past this year. All of the dead money rolls onto this year's cap. With Stafford in 2022, they will be paying the QB position approx. $12M less than if they had kept Goff. That's a better QB plus he's much cheaper.
What could they do with that additional $12M?
