meaning, he does not create alot off script or something outside of the scheme or system.
Guys like Mahomes, Murray, Wilson, Watson, Allen, Jackson, Mayfield, Hurts, Jones, Burrow, Herbert and Tannehill can. Not just by running, but by extending plays with their athleticism.
Improving the OL obviously makes the offense better. No doubt.
But McVay likes to run a lot of bootlegs. Issue with Goff is that he doesn't threaten the defense with his ability to take off and run. At least a consistent enough rate to make the defense plan for that. A more mobile QB running McVays bootlegs becomes a much more dangerous weapon than Goff could ever be. Thats not a knock on Goff. he just isn't mobile. He isn't even a very heady runner.
Lastly, even if you have the worlds best line and the worlds best offensive coordinator, there are defenses and defensive coordinators out there that will get pressure on the QB. All QBs struggle with pressure, but Goff moreso. A mobile QB at least gives the defense or DC one more thing to consider and at the very least, gives the QB himself a chance to extend the play outside the system because of his mobility.
There are alot more QBs that look like Joe Burrow or Russell Wilson than QBs that look like Matt Ryan or Matt Stafford or Derek Carr or Jared Goff.
At least that is my thinking. I'm not a huge fan of strictly running QBs with questionable arms. Cam newton, Lamar Jackson, Tim Tebow come to mind. But a mobile QB that looks to extend plays with his legs and still throw the ball down the field are more my type. At least they are now. I used to be a big pocket passer guy myself, but as the game evolves, so has my view of what a successful QB looks like. And as I study college QBs year in and year out, the statuesque pocket passer with the big brain and good arm are becoming dinosaurs. Look at the top 4 QBs this year. All mobile. Last year. Tua, Burrow and Herbert are all mobile to different extents. Next years crop will mostly be mobile guys at the top of the draft.
