Now don't get the title of this thread twisted. Despite playing well, Wolford is in no position to teach a doctorate course in NFL quarterbacking. But that doesn't mean that Jared Goff couldn't find himself getting reacquainted with some things that he
knows (but has lost touch with recently).
To wit:
1) Ball security in and outside of the pocket. Small hands or not, Jared shouldn't be putting the ball on the ground so much. I hope that he watched Wolford keep the ball high 'n tight when running with the football. Dude took some hellacious shots on Sunday and never once did the ball budge from his body. This is fundamental and Jared needs to return to that.
2) Speaking of running with the football...another thing that I hope that Goff reacquainted himself with was the term "decisiveness." Although Wolford went through his progressions, once he realized that the coverage had won he didn't wait around for something that wasn't going to happen (i.e. a receiver breaking free at the last second). No, he made a decision...whether that be running for what he could get or simply throwing the ball away. Again, this isn't anything that Goff doesn't know or can't do.
3) Going back to progressions, Wolford seemed to look deep before coming back to his shorter routes. The OL gave him enough time to do so (he just couldn't complete the passes). Goff has ALOT more arm talent than Wolford can dream of having. He needs to remember this and use it. No more of these deep passes where WR's (who have won at the top of their route) are forced to slow down and contest the ball. Use that arm talent and chunk it. Let Reynolds or Jefferson or whoever get on their horse and track it down.
Provided that Goff's finger is at least 75%, I expect him to start on Saturday (due to talent and experience). And though I don't expect him to flip the switch and go back to 2018,I definitely expect him to play more focused than when I last saw him.
Fortunately, we have a defense that should continue to slow Seattle down. And should Goff disappoint and wet the bed again in the first half...then McVay at least knows that he has a wildcard as an option.
I expect the Rams to win.
