I had this debate with a fellow Ram fan during game.
His take and it seems popular in this forum and from media pundits.
Is that McVay calls his offense dumbs it down etc to cover up Goffs shortcomings like he gameplans around Goff and would be calling better games with more innovative stuff if not for Goff.9

I can't imagine McVay was not consulted when Rams gave Goff the 134 million dollar contract. It seems absurd the franchise forced Goff on him. So I say McVay was all in with Goff no way he links himself to someone he's got to "game plan" around for his future,
He and Goffs success are inked to one another imo ...If Goff fails McVay fails.... Vice versa
I believe it's same concept we just lack the parts Cooks,Watkins,Healthy Gurley thst made it work.... that and Def coordinators figuring out the gimmicky nature.
Anyway this is not a defense of Goff

I think it's pretty simple: the NFL has figured out Goff's shortcomings and how to exploit them.
I'm sure McVay was consulted and they didn't force Goff on him. I feel McVay was all in...at that time.
Things change quickly in the NFL. Since the end of 2018, a lot of Goff's weaknesses have been exposed and teams have figured out the system.
To be honest, in hindsight, the Rams made a mistake extending him early. The same one they made with Gurley.
And yes, in addition to the league catching up to Goff, he's lost a lot of weapons. He had an elite OL, the OPOY RB, and elite receiving weapons. That combined with how he performed in McVay's system was all new which gave him a short-term advantage. That's how 2018 happened.
It was concerning that he needed every unit around him to be elite to function at a high level but I think the Rams figured that as the QB matured, he could still do well with fewer weapons because he would be better.
The problem in a nutshell: Goff is not developing, he's a limited QB, the system is no longer novel, and the elite weapons are gone.
