The problem is, people look at passing yards instead of results.
Generally speaking, the teams with the highest passing yards at the end of the year have mediocre to poor records. The Falcons and Steelers have been at the top of the list for a while, but they've not gone anywhere.
This is still a game where effective running matters. And whether you pass to run or run to pass, the threat of a REAL run game must be present.
Goff is a superior passer who last year had to contend with a revolving door Oline. This year McVay is making more of a commitment to the run game and so the passing attempts and yards decrease but the offense flows better. He is also acknowledging that most teams have paid special attention to stocking up on pass rushers. Hence moving pockets, roll outs, bootlegs, shorter throws to shorter routes, etc.
Not even the great Tom Brady could carry the team only with his arm (he tried to do that last week, and the Bucs lost).
Maybe Aaron Rogers. But just how has GB done over these last few years? Playoffs, yes (in a fairly weak division). But they are usually one and done.
Even Mahommes has a really tough time when the running game isn't working well (hence the moves Andy Reid made in the off season to bolster the run game). Bellicheck stifled the run game against them it was only by the Pats' inept QB play that the Chiefs finally got a handle on the game.
Russell Wilson is a special case because he is both a great runner and great passer. But the Seahawks were built on having a really good power running game to open up the passing.
We're fortunate to have Goff and he just continues to improve.
