Disclaimer: I don't do scouting at any level and I have no idea what other team's might be thinking in regards to their own potential free agents.
But despite those limitations I still decided to take a look at who the Rams might be looking at in a potential trade for an edge.
Assumptions:
- The Rams budget would be under $5M
- The trade would take place after game 5
- The edge the Rams get will be a FA after this season
According to overthecap.com the Rams have $7M in cap space. I arbitrarily decided that the Rams would want to spend less than $5M of that on an edge.
Salaries would be prorated based on when the trade takes place. I'll assume a trade after week 5, meaning the Rams would have to pay 11/17ths of the new guy's salary. (It's 17ths rather than 16ths because the NFL pays their players over the course of the 17 week season: they get a paycheck for the bye week and for each of the 16 games.)
With a budget of $5M the Rams could afford someone whose 2020 salary is under $7.73M.
For this exercise I focused on guys who will be FAs at the end of the year thinking that if a team was going to let a guy play out his contract and leave via FA then maybe they'd be open to getting something for him now.
