Goff had to deal with two serious challenges last year, either of which would have crippled most QB’s.
The OL has been discussed but it cannot be overstated. Starting Boom at LG and Allen at C was clearly a mistake since neither was ready. Then came the season ending injuries. This alone would have doomed most offenses. Moving Blythe to C and starting rookies Edwards and Evans actually IMPROVED the OL and it kept ascending as they gelled together. Kromer made chicken salad out of chickens**t here. A truly impressive accomplishment and one that I hope never to see a Ram coach have to deal with again.
But the other challenge hasn’t been mentioned in this thread. Goff had to simultaneously deal with a subpar Gurley. One that had regressed from an OPOY terror to one that D’s didn’t respect on play action anymore. This RB deficit occurred while both Hendy and Brown experienced multiple game loss injuries. It was a freaking nightmare Perfect Storm of challenges to this O. Another that I hope to never see again.
So, I’m cutting Goff and McVay a mile of slack for ‘19. Despite all of the above they finished 9-7 in the toughest division in football and missed the playoffs by a mere missed 44 yarder FG attempt by GZ.
I fully expect Goff, the entire O, and the entire Ram team to come roaring back in ‘20.
