Unfortunately it cost the Rams money, but for the present, it was obvious to the naked eye that Gurley had lost some explosion, , could he still be effective, absolutely, however, other parts of his game were trending downward as well especially his receiving skills. When McVay came to Los Angeles the Rams signed Lance Dunbar to be the change of pace back and the receiver to come in on third downs. Dunbar was hurt and McVay discovered how good Gurley was as a receiver and Gurley became a three down back.
That's why Gurley got the 2nd contract and the Rams philosophy was to give second contract to yournger guys and Gurley was still 25. Since maybe against the Eagles or Bears or who knows, Gurley's knee has been an issue and it was best for both parties to move on.
