Just because a team gives you a contract doesn't necessarily mean you're the face of the franchise or leader/best player on that team. The Rams just as much saw Gurley and Donald as the face of their team than Goff. I'm not sure there are many franchise QBs who aren't even the most impactful players on their teams. But maybe you see all of them as franchise. Maybe I'm overemphasizing the "elite" factor. Idk.
But again, IMO, if you are the franchise qb then it's you who needs to elevate your team. Donald produces despite triple teams and that's why he's worth the money. You can't say "well he needed more offensive line, pass catching, etc) if the reason for you not having those things is because you're paying him 20 percent of your cap. Same for Russell, big Ben, Rodgers, Manning, Luck, etc. You pay these guys because they're good enough to excel you despite deficiencies. I'm not saying Goff needs to be a savior but he was just plain bad last year.
And I also want to reiterate that I'm a fan of Goff and even admitted that he's young enough that what we've seen so far are just growing pains. But it's not even debatable that he's needed almost perfect conditions to produce thus far. And I'm hoping that he continues to grow at making the correct reads, seeing coverages pre snap, not turning the ball over, and folding under pressure.
But once more, I am a fan of Goff lol.
