I don't care if we made it to the SB despite his QB play. He sucked down the stretch and was awful in Super Bowl. There were waaaay too many question marks about his play to reward him like that. Rams easily could have let him play out his contract AND even used franchise tag for a year or two if they wanted.
Yeah he sucked in New Orleans in the NFC Championship game
You really think McVay was gonna let him walk?
They were smart enough to see what's coming with the new salary cap and locked him up early, cuz it is only going to get more expensive every year that goes by.
Believe it or not , but McVay and Snead know much much more about football and the Rams organization than you....I know, crazy huh?
The choices weren't between extending him at that time and letting him walk. He was already under contract for 2020 with his 5th year option. They had time to extend him. They could have waited until after the 2019 season and possibly gotten a better deal given his subpar season.
Given his major struggles towards the end of 2018, I think one could reasonably question the wisdom of extending him early. Both sides of that debate have valid points. Snead and McVay do know more about football than almost anyone critical of their decision to extend him early but the jury is still out on the wisdom of the choice.
