They need the money elsewhere beyond a run stuffer. Outside of some diehard Rams fans, no one thinks he has much value.
I don't agree. I think he was undervalued in a thankless role. And I mean by Rams fans.
Look around the league. How many straight-up 3/4 DEs have big stats. It's rare.
I do agree he’s been underrated, but he’s also been overpaid. And with him hitting free agency at a old 29, I think there’s very little chance he’s in horns next year. Will be too expensive to to stop the run for this this team. Will definitely miss his leadership
He was paid exactly the going rate guys at his position were getting for 2nd contracts the year he came up.
Stephon Tuitt of the Steelers is also a respected classic 5-tech style 3/4 DE, had almost half the number of qb pressures MB did, and is paid about 1 M more than Brockers. Why more? He signed a year later than MB did.
2nd contracts work this way--if a guy is a starter, and you want to keep him, you give him the going rate for his position that year. Or you don't pay him and he walks.
I have been saying for over a year now that MB would walk after his 2nd contract is up. So this is not about keeping him. But I also hope they can replace him.
