Ram Fan Teacher
So basically the Rams had to decide to pay Goff the top slotted QB (2nd contract) salary OR let him walk.
Tough call. Not many alternatives for the Rams, especially after giving up so many picks to move up.
So by paying earlier, that would lessen the blow financially if Goff doesn't pan out...right?
Negotiations for 2nd contracts mostly have to do with structure, guaranteed money, that kind of thing. Not the general amount. (Which is measured by annual avg. amount.)
2nd contracts are slotted. Rams basically gave Goff the amount a starting qb up for a 2nd contract was getting in 2019 when they signed him. There can be a little room for variation but not much.
This is all built right into the record of 2nd contracts--easy enough to follow if you use a caps/contracts site like Over.the.cap
And it's not a "tough call," it is what it is. Same with every team.
I don't think there's any question of Goff "panning" out, he already has. He is a starting caliber franchise qb and that's what he was paid as.
They did it "early" (actually it wasn't) because you either tie up your franchise qb or you start over at qb.
